In the churning of the sea, the gods and the asuras together brought out many gems, but only the gods got the nectar. Thinking that if the asuras became immortal, their atrocities would wreak havoc everywhere and there would be no remedy, Lord Vishnu took the form of Mohini and gave the nectar only to the gods.

This angered Lord Shukracharya of Daityas and Asuras. He felt that injustice had been done to the Asuras. He attained Sanjeevani Vidya by doing severe penance. Sanjivani Vidya is the science of bringing the dead back to life. No one else had such knowledge.

He used his knowledge to support Bali Raja. In any battle, his soldiers or himself became victims, Shukracharya would use his sanjeevani vidya and restore the strength of the asuras. Under his leadership and under the guidance of Guru Shukracharya, the Asura Empire achieved great success. Gained the kingdom on earth, defeated the gods and gained the kingdom in heaven too.

This victim was also righteous and religious. He started great sacrifices in his kingdom. From this he used to do great charity. He was known as a benevolent king through whom no beggar went back empty-handed.

When a Yagya is performed, it is done by remembering the deities and worshiping them. It is said that the host of that yajna gets merit and the deities worshiped in it get strength. He and Shukracharya took care that even the gods would not get the fruits of this yajna.

Devas King Indra and all the Gods who came out of heaven went to beg Lord Vishnu. He expressed the fear that Yajna has no power, the victim cannot be killed because Guru Shukracharya can bring him back to life and if he completes 100 Yajnas he himself will reach Indrapada.

Lord Vishnu decided to incarnate to restore Indra’s heaven and restore the status quo. He was born to Maharishi Kashyap and his wife Aditi.

Vaman Avatar:

His form was very small. His height was very short. Hence he was named as Vamana. In a few years, his sacrificial rites were performed. Many great sages and gods were present in it. Vamana was sacrificed by Maharishi Pulha. Sage Agastya gave deer skin. Marichi Rishi gave Palash penalty. Sage Angiras gave clothes. Suryadev gave an umbrella to hold on his head. Sage Bhrigu gave Khadava, Saraswati Devi gave Rudraksha garland. Gurudev gave Kamandalu and Kubera gave the alms bowl. Vamana’s mother gave Kaupin clothes.

Baliraja’s hundredth Yagya had started here. Guru Shukracharya was happy. Supplicants from far and wide had come in anticipation of the sacrifice. Baliraja was giving everyone what they asked for, earning merit. He left no stone unturned in satisfying the supplicants. His treasury was empty.

Vamana reached there and stood before the king to beg. Everyone was shocked to see Vamana’s sweet childlike form.

Baliraja looked at Vamana and folded his hands and said “Dwarf, my treasury has become empty while fulfilling the wishes of the beggars who came before you. Sorry but now I have no money left to pay.”

Vamana said. “King, first know what I want. Then decide whether you can give me the desired charity or not.”

“Okay, tell me what you want?” vaman avatar bali pratipada pauranik katha

“I only want three steps of land.” vaman avatar bali pratipada pauranik katha

Everyone started laughing. vaman avatar bali pratipada pauranik katha

“What? Three steps to land? Oh, if you want to ask for land, should you ask for a village or a city? Just three steps of land coming to the king who rules over the three worlds?”

“I have enough bus, sir. Will you let me speak?”

“Oh, but what will you do with this much land?”

“My lord, did you ask the previous beggars what they would do with your donation? Then why are you asking me?”

The king was appreciative of Vamana’s conversational tact. But Shukracharya began to have doubts. They suspected that it was a conspiracy of the gods. They tried to warn the king.

“King, I am suspicious of this dwarf and his strange demands, pay no attention to this. Let us complete our yajna.”

Vamana immediately said “Do you think your yajna will be completed without fulfilling the simple demand of one supplicant who came to the yajna?”

Baliraja had so far fulfilled the wishes of all the supplicants. He said “No. Gurudev is right as the dwarf says, how can I complete the yajna leaving the supplicant unsatisfied?”

Vamana said “Then take that water vessel and give up the vow of charity.”

Baliraja took the water vessel. Shukracharya was convinced that there was some conspiracy in this. They realized that the victim would not listen to them and tried to disrupt his resolve. He sat down in miniature form in the spout of that water-sheet. So water could not come out of it. vaman avatar bali pratipada pauranik katha

Vamana recognized this. He suggested to Baliraja that “something must be stuck in the vessel. Take a darbha (stick) and throw it into it, the water will clear the way.”

The king did so and unfortunately the stick went into the eye of Shukracharya who was seated in miniature and one of his eyes failed. They came out very angry and left angry with the king. vaman avatar bali pratipada pauranik katha

Baliraja had made a promise to Vamana so he broke his resolve and allowed Vamana to take three paces of land anywhere in his kingdom.

Now Vamana performed a miracle. Enlarging his size, the leader assumed a giant form. Then he took two steps, placing one foot on earth and the other in heaven. And then asked the victim “Now where to place the third step?”

Now the victim had a question. He recognized that Lord Vishnu himself had come to his door as a supplicant and was testing him. He sat down before God and said “Put the third step on my head Lord”. He dedicated himself to God.

Vamana placed the third step on the king’s head. He was pleased with Baliraja’s dedication, commitment and charity.

Lord Vishnu re-engraved the earth and heaven with his footsteps. He gave back the earth to humans and the heavens to the gods. and sending Baliraja to the netherworld as a reward for his deeds, blessed him to rule there for eternity, himself willing to be the gatekeeper of his kingdom at his will.

It is said that Baliraja loved his subjects and the subjects loved the king. So Vishnu allowed Baliraja to visit his subjects once every year.

The city of Mahabalipuram in Kerala is considered to be the capital of Baliraja. And he is believed to visit the subjects during the festival of Onam. So this festival is celebrated in his honour. vaman avatar bali pratipada pauranik katha

The day when King Bali was sent to the underworld by Vamana is celebrated in Diwali as Bali Pratipada. vaman avatar bali pratipada pauranik katha
